This introspective, nocturnal rumination was written in January/February of 2017. Just months before its completion, my friend Lara Downes (for whom it’s written) visited me in Louisville. It was fall of 2016, and still comfortable enough to sit outside with a fire pit and bourbon. Later that evening, she sat at my piano – an upright, that was slightly out of tune – and played the first dozen bars from the pencil and paper manuscript.
